the illustration process

pen and ink

Should you need a creative image solution - a message of identity, emotion, instruction, situation or narrative - you will be pleased to know there is a simple process for you to get the illustration/s you want.

It begins with a meeting in person or on the phone in which you outline the needs of the creative project, its intended usage, the time frame, a budget if possible, and any other information or reference you have which you feel would help.

Using this information a quote and agreement are drafted.

Research and thought then go into making as effective an image solution as possible. Stories or science articles are read, metaphors or allegories are made up, gags are written, ideas are noted, assessed and expanded on.

Reference is collected from libraries, magazines, the net, or reference photos/sketches are taken.

Based on the research and reference one or several quick, very rough, initial sketches are created and presented, with associated explanations, ideas and suggested colour schemes.

Any layout, size or colour changes are discussed, giving everyone a solid understanding of the concept and direction.

The final art is created and delivered by post, email or FTP, and the project is invoiced.

I also like to talk with a customer after a job is completed to find out how they felt about the effectiveness of the finished result and how well the process worked for them.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have about my illustration process and the ways that I can help with the image solutions for your project.
